LAGOS—INDICATIONS emerged, weekend, that a new minimum wage for workers may be announced for workers on May 1, 2010, expected to considerably push up the current wage of N7,500.
Organised labour is demanding for what it calls a minimum living wage of N52,200 to enable workers cope with the worsening economic and living conditions in the country.
A member of the labour team in the minimum wage committee told Vanguard that the committee had done most of the works and that it was expected that on the Workers’ day celebration, otherwise known as May Day, a new minimum wage should be announced for the Nigerian workers.
When contacted, General Secretary of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Mr. John Odah, told Vanguard on phone that it would not be good to be speculative about it, but that NLC had since last December expressed the desire for the new minimum wage to take off by May 1.
