A MEETING between pro-chancellors and vice-chancellors of private universities and the Minister of Education, Dr. Sam Egwu, scheduled for Abuja today is expected to deliberate on the lingering issue of allowing private universities to access the Education Trust Fund (ETF).

A recent lecture by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS), Kuru, Plateau State entitled “Micro-Credit Programme As a Tool for Wealth/Youth Empowerment Creation and Good Governance” was an eye opener in many ways.

It is very painful to accept it, but everything Lord Lugard said in 1922 is still true today. He was prophetic. Today, Ikedi Ohakim, the Imo State Governor, confirms that “Nigeria has become the black sheep of the world oil producing community for her lack of accountability and unproductive use of the oil revenue.” If you think Lugard was harsh, read Ikedi Ohakim’s “The Courage To Challenge”.

Governors Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State and Bukola Saraki of Kwara State who visited the President in Saudi Arabia, returned to the country, yesterday, and declared to their colleagues in the Governors’ Forum that President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who is undergoing treatment in a Saudi Arabian hospital for heart ailment, is responding well to treatment.

PRESIDENT Umaru Musa Yar’Adua last April told his party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and by extension his own aides, that it was time to work and not campaigns. Jobbers started campaigning for a second term for the President before he completed his one year in office.

The taxman must, if he would survive, pay people to come up with more and more ways his people can be taxed without them feeling as though they are overtaxed; or he dies. Lagos has done this and continues to do so most admirably, putting more emphasis on identifying the better-to-do and taxing them accordingly.
