Delta spends N686m on dead pensioners

By Austin Ogwuda
ASABA—DELTA State government has spent about N686 million on payment of gratuities and pension arrears of dead pensioners to their respective next of kins between 2007 and 2009.

Chairman of the State Local Government Pension Board, Mr. Patrick Fovie, who stated this at a one-day social assistance workshop and presentation of gratuity cheques to some retirees in Asaba, made it clear that the Board would continue to give prompt attention to the processing of retirees’ benefits by avoiding unnecessary delays.

According to him, “this workshop was put in place to guide retirees in their post-service years, particularly with regards to the prudent management of their benefits.”

He said that the social assistance workshop, which will focus on the challenges of retirement in Nigeria, the implication of child bearing for pensioners and investment opportunities for pensioners,  among others,  would no doubt be beneficial to the participants.

Presenting the cheques, the Executive Secretary to the State Local Government Pensions Board, Mrs. Beatrice Bialonwu, called on them to invest in their future, “as this is the only way to curtail hardship and stress occasioned by lack of financial power”.
