ENUGU—A member of Board of Trustees (BOT) of Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), Chief Sam Nkire, has warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government of President Umar Yar’Adua, not to tamper with the price of petroleum products at this period of gross hunger, unemployment, insecurity and absolute frustration in the country.
Chief Nkire said that the complete deregulation of downstream sector of the oil industry was a time-bomb waiting to be detonated, as it would further heat up of the already charged economic atmosphere in Nigeria.
Nkire, who spoke exclusively to Vanguard in Enugu, yesterday, said no matter the difficulties being faced by the Federal Government in honouring its promises and commitments as a government, “further increase in the price of petroleum products, especially fuel is capable of triggering civil disobedience due to the prevailing hardship in the land.â€
He said even though his party, the PPA was a partner in the Government of National Unity (GNU), it cannot share blame with PDP in the poor management of affairs of the country due to PPA’s marginal participation.
Said Nkire, “PPA is a very junior partner in the GNU and can only share blame according to the degree of its involvement and the ratio of its participation if any at all.â€
He told Nigerians to hold the PDP government totally responsible for the poor state of country, saying the PPA would take full responsibility for its actions or inactions when it comes to power in the year 2011.
