PDP has failed Nigeria — Commissioner

By Ndahi Marama

MAIDUGURI — The Borno State Commissioner of Water Resources, Alhaji Abubakar Kyari has condemned the lackadaisical attitude of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for not tackling the nation’s power problem with all the seriousness it deserves for the past ten years.

During an interview with journalists at his Maiduguri resident, yesterday, on how the epileptic power supply in the country is hampering economic development, the economist turned politician said that for the past ten years, the PDP government under the leadership of former President Obasanjo and the incumbent, Alhaji Musa Yar ‘Adua have failed to address the problems of the power sector which is the backbone of any country’s economic development.

He stated that the generation of 6,000 megawatts by the end of this year is not feasible, adding that for effective power supply, generation, transmission and distribution must go simultaneously, because generating even 100,000 megawatts without getting it to the end-consumer is useless.

Kyari said that the Federal Government should decentralise power supply according to zones, such as Afan to supply the Niger-Delta area, Shiroro for North Central and East, Kainji North, North-West, Egbin for Lagos and Ogun states and Osogbo, South-West.

According to the commissioner said, “a situation in which some few Nigerian squandered over N400 billion from just five banks indicates the high level of corruption in the banking sector. From 1999 to date, Borno State government received less than N200 billion as its statuary allocations which is less than half of the money given out as loans without collateral.”

He added that so much resources, running into billions of naira, have been committed to the power sector without results due to the high level of corruption in Nigeria.
