Jigawa asks local councils to pay contractors

By Aliyu Dangida

DUTSE —THE Jigawa State government has directed all the 27 local councils in the state to hasten and pay contractors all money owed them to the tune of over N500 million with immediate effect,  Commissioner for Local Government in the state, Alhaji Nasiru Umar, has announced.

The Commissioner who made this known in his office while speaking with newsmen said Governor Sule Lamido gave the directive and that the funds had been provided for the settlement of contractual liabilities of the councils.

He added that all payment vouchers of such liabilities were brought from the local government councils to his ministry, and that all of them were screened properly and recommended that all genuine ones be paid immediately.

The commissioner noted that the measure was in line with Alhaji Sule Lamido’s government policy of settling liabilities of all projects executed for the state and the local government areas.

“As he does not want to leave any liability by the time he leaves government, he also doesn’t want local governments to leave behind any project liability when they complete their tenure, except development projects, which transform the lives of their people as a good legacy,” he said.
