Controversy trails Enugu PDP LG primaries

By Tony Edike

ENUGU – CONTROVERSIES have trailed last Saturday’s Local Government primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu state, following insistence of some power brokers in Enugu South Local Government Area, that the elected candidate, Mr. Nwabueze Mario, was not their favoured candidate.

Vanguard gathered that the primaries in the council was fair and peaceful, following last minute’s withdrawal of most of the 17 aspirants for the chairmanship race.  Seven out of the contestants withdrew at the venue of the primary, declaring their support for the eventual winner, Mr. Nwabueze Okafor.

Ironically, Messrs Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo Jnr,  the favoured candidate of Senators Jim Nwobodo and Ken Nnamani, Mr. Silas Ogbodo, an Abuja-based trader, stayed away from the voting centre, which witnessed massive turn-out of PDP delegates.

Nwabueze Okafor, who became the only candidate for the primaries, received overwhelming support of the delegates, polling 251 out of a total of 253 votes cast. Two votes were invalid.

But as the delegates were still celebrating the victory of Okafor, which was announced by the Returning Officer, Dr. Kamanu Louis, who led two other electoral officers, Col. S.N Ikpeama (rtd) and Mrs. Uche Onyefuru for the exercise, the party dramatically announced yesterday that the result of the council has been withheld.

It was learnt that the sudden alteration of the result might not be unconnected with the visit of Senators Jim Nwobodo and Ken Nnamani to Governor Sullivan Chime at his country home, yesterday.
