Multinational pharmaceutical company, Pfizer Specialties Nigeria Limited, has restated its support towards better management of cardiovascular diseases in the country.
In a statement signed by the Country Manager, Dr. Enricco Liggeri, the company pledged to team up with the Nigerian medical professionals, the media and other stakeholders to ensure that cardiovascular health is given its deserved attention in the country.
Liggeri expressed satisfaction with the Cardiovascular Summit organised by the company recently, saying deliberations at the summit had justified Pfizer’s position on the need to pay greater attention to the disease now to avert further deaths and ill health among Nigerians.
“We are please to note that care givers in the country are not only aware of the threats posed by CVD, there’s an overwhelming consensus among them on the need for urgent action to stem the current unacceptable growing incidence of the risk factors,” he said.
“CVDs and related morbidity/mortality are becoming a very relevant and underestimated issue in Africa . The fast modifications of lifestyles, in line with social and economic development are exposing large segments of the population to a potential epidemic with disastrous consequences that will become evident in ten to twenty years.
“This is why we are so pleased with the attendance at this second Summit , which was larger than anticipated, and the quality of presentations, which are a testimonial of both Pfizer’s credibility about CVD matters as well as the seriousness of the issue of CVDs in Sub-Saharan Africa.â€
Dr. Liggeri disclosed that Pfizer would strive to make the CVD Summit an annual event to ensure that the gains of previous Summits are sustained.
