Onitsha trade fair suffers setback

Onitsha -The proposed Onitsha Trade and Tourism Fair, billed to take place between November 27 to December 7 will no longer hold at the Chuba Ikpeazu Memorial Stadium, Onitsha as scheduled.

Mrs Chinwe Anowai, Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, told newsmen in Onitsha that the state executive council had resolved not to use the stadium for purposes other than sporting activities.

Anowai said, “I can tell you categorically that no other activity will take place here (Stadium), except sporting activities. This means nothing else other than sports. Proposed or anticipated social event will not take place in this stadium.

The government did not, however, announce a new venue for the fair, which is being orgainised by the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ONICCIMA).

The Commissioner, however, said that anybody or group could use the peripherals of the stadium and not the main bowl.

However, observers are of the opinion that the state government may have taken the decision to curb the abuse of the facility.

It will be recalled that in July, ONICCIMA had told newsmen that the stadium would host the 14th edition of the fair.
