Edo ex-CMD kidnapped despite Operation Thunderstorm

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN — BARE-LY a week after Governor Adams Oshiomhole inaugurated the special security outfit code-named Operation Thunderstorm, to check excesses of kidnappers and other crimes in the state, a gang of suspected kidnappers struck again and abducted a former Chief Medical Director of the Central Hospital in Benin City, Dr Victor Akhabue.

Vanguard learnt that Akhabue, who was abducted in  the early hours of yesterday while driving to his private hospital at Ikpoba Hill, Benin City, was taken to an unknown destination.

Eyewitness account said that the abductors, who overpowered Akhabue at the gate, forced him into the booth of their car and sped off with him.

It was further learnt that the abductors had already contacted the family and are demanding for N20 million ransom.

Reacting, Chairman of the state chapter of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Dr Osahon Enabulele, has appealed to the kidnappers to show the necessary understanding that the victim was not expected to have the kind of money they were demanding from him.

He said that, “the erroneous impression that doctors are very wealthy people is responsible for the recent abduction of not less than five doctors and, in some cases, their children who were released after ransom had been extracted from the parents.

We are saying that if this matter is not looked into properly by the relevant bodies, we may have to take a serious decision that the public may not like.”

Contacted, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in the state, Mr. Clement Adoda, confirmed the abduction adding that the state CID was investigating it.

He added that “we got the information late and that was why we were not able to clamp down on the suspects. We are investigating the matter seriously”.
