Nwankwo Kanu

Globacom Limited, the Official Sponsor of the National football team, the Super Eagles, has called on the players to reciprocate the massive out_pouring of support for them by Nigerians with a resounding victory in Sunday’s World Cup 2010 qualifier with the Harambe Stars of Kenya.

The appeal was made by Mr. Adewale Sangowawa, Executive Director of Globacom, in a telephone discussion with Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, shortly before their morning training on Friday. Sangowawa told the Eagles skipper that Globacom has lent support to the mobilisation effort of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Nigerian Football Supporters Club (NFSC) to ensure that the match on Sunday will put the country in good stead to qualify for the first ever World Cup on the continent.

In the words of the Globacom Executive Director, “Globacom as the biggest supporter of football in this country has been following the preparations of the team for the match against Kenya and we are confident that you (Kanu) will lead the team to victory. Nigerians are solidly behind the Super Eagles and victory on Sunday will make us all proud”.

Sangowawa told Kanu that Globacom has instituted a reward for each goal scored by the team as a way of encouraging team spirit among the players and motivating them to win. “On behalf of our Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr and the entire Globacom staff, I am offering you our support and wishing the Super Eagles excellent luck on Sunday and in all the remaining World Cup qualifying matches”, Sangowawa said to the Super Eagles captain.

In his response, Kanu said he was deeply touched by the phone call which he said was the only solidarity call the team had received from any individual or corporate organisation. “I am grateful for this call and will pass your message to the team, remarked Kanu, adding “we have always appreciated the kind gesture and support of Dr. Adenuga and his company, Globacom, for the Super Eagles and all the national teams. We have resolved to win on Sunday to make Nigerians happy and proud”.
