AWKA—463 student cultists have renounced their membership of various cult groups at Anambra State University.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Fidelis Okafor, told newsmen at Uli campus of the institution that the affected students made the renouncement during a religious programme in the university, describing it as the outcome of a moral re-awakening taking place in the university.
He said though some of the cultists were shy to come out publicly during the religious programme, they later voluntarily approached authorities of the university and vowed never to associate with cultism after destroying materials that identified them with the dreaded cults.
Most of the students were said to have explained that they were lured into cultism by friends, while others said they thought that belonging to the groups would give them security and make them popular.
The Vice Chancellor said with the exercise, Anambra State University had become cult free, assuring parents and guardians that there was no more cause for alarm in the university.
To sustain the goals of eradication of cultism, he said a forum for regular interaction between the management and students had been established, adding that the forum would encourage regular interaction to solve problems that might arise.
