Police rescue ‘witch’ from angry mob

The entire Iwajuwa street in Gowon Estate area of Lagos was yesterday thrown into disarray following the discovery of a lady right on top of the roof of  a three storey- building on number 4.

The lady’s confession on how she found herself on the roof startled all present as she claimed she was a witch on a mission.

Although she did not reveal her identity but she kept begging to be allowed to fly back to Cross River State, where she claimed to have come from.

Occupants of the building were jolted from sleep at the wee hours of yesterday morning, following a loud bang on the roof. None of them could however, go out to ascertain the cause of the bang which they mistook for an explosion.

However at about 5am, one of the occupants who was on his way to work, was reportedly attracted by a strange noise from the top of the building where to his surprise he noticed a human form and thereby raised an alarm.

Effort to bring down the lady who had a scary look failed at first. But when she was eventually brought down, it was difficult to ascertain whether she was a man or a woman. Immediately,   the inquisitive occupants decided to know how she got there.

After must persuasion, the lady, revealed that she was a witch sent all the way from Obubra in Cross Rivers State to afflict her victim with epilepsy. She claimed to have flown from Cross Rivers to Lagos on a coco yam leaf. However, trouble started for her upon reaching the building of her victim whom she refused to disclose his name.

According to her, “ when I got there, dogs started barking on sensing my presence. In my confused state, I lost balance and landed hard on the roof in my human form”.

After her revelation, she was dragged to the middle of the road where an angry mob descended on her and tore her clothes into shreds, where she was discovered to be a lady on seeing her flabby breasts. The angry mob, who demanded  at the same time for more confession, insisted to no avail that she revealed who her victim was..

But at a point, she reportedly became violent and stood up to challenge her attackers. She reportedly threw stones and dangerous objects at them, causing everyone to take to his heels , with mothers desperately calling their children to flee the scene.

But some brave young men were able to disarm her and were at the verge of lynching her when policemen from Gowon Estate arrived and saved the situation. She reportedly put up a stiff resistance and attempted to bite any of the policemen, until she was handcuffed and whisked away.

One of the residents who spoke to Crime Alert on condition of anonymity said, “ we heard the loud noise on the roof at about 3am . We could not ascertain whether it was an explosion or robbery operation. We all stayed awake until someone raised alarm that somebody was on top of the building. We know there is nothing like witchcraft in the law that is why most people wanted to kill her  before the police arrived and saved her.”
