Tributes are still pouring in for Dagrin who breathed last, last Thursday. The soldier rapper Olaonipekun Olaitan aka Dagrin, died late in the evening, ending the 10 day- speculations and prayers for his recovery, throwing family, friends, fans and indeed the entire entertainment industry into deep mourning.
As at press time on Thursday, his family was yet to make a statement but manager Tunde Peters confirmed to on-line entertainment journal- netng, that the rapper had passed on. Further investigations revealed that the rapper who grew popular with his hit single â€˜Pon pon ponâ€™ had suffered a relapse in his treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
Singer Wande Coal also confirmed on his twitter time line that he was at the hospital when he(Dagrin) died and even afterwards. He tweeted to a doubting DJ Neptune at about 9pm, â€œdeptune na true, I dey d hospitalâ€.
The three category nominee in the forthcoming Hip Hop World Awards (HHWA) 2010 ceremony was operated upon at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital on Wednesday (14-04-2010), hours after he ran into a stationary truck around Alakara Police station in Mushin, while driving home around 3 am. He was said to have been returning home from an assignment, and he had called home severally to tell them not to lock the gate; that he was coming home.
The manager and close family sources allegedly confirmed to NET that the rapper was left unconscious after running into the truck, and was left hanging between life and death before he was rescued by policemen on patrol. The policemen reportedly called his manager after finding his number on Dagrinâ€™s â€˜last dialledâ€™ list. He was initially taken to Tai Solarin private hospital in Mushin, before his minders moved him to LUTH.
The rapper was believed to have sustained numerous injuries, especially on the chest, jaws and head.
His manager confirmed he had an operation same day at LUTH and had been at intensive care unit (ICU). It is alleged that the doctors found no trace of alcohol in his system during examination after the accident.
He was signed on to Edylyne Records and was allegedly presented the car, a brand new black Nissan Maxima, by his record label about three weeks before the crash; few days before the official presentation. DJ Zeez is signed to the same label.
