The government of Nasarawa State has said that no fewer than eight people have died following the recent outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.

The Nasarawa State Government, has said that no fewer than eight people have so far died following the recent outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.

Rivers State Government, yesterday, confirmed a case of Lassa fever, but advised residents of the state not to panic as the situation had been brought under control.

This week, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed nine deaths and 20 cases arising from fresh outbreaks of Lassa fever in seven states of the Federation. A breakdown shows that there were three deaths out of six confirmed cases in Plateau State while Nasarawa also recorded three deaths. Two persons died in Ogun State, one death was recorded in Taraba out of the six confirmed cases even as Edo, Ondo and Rivers States recorded one confirmed case each.

The Rivers ministry of health has confirmed a case of Lassa fever in a private health facility in the state.

The Commissioner for Health in Ogun, Dr Babatunde Ipaye, has declared the state free of Lassa fever following a recent expression of fear at a patient showing signs of the fever.

The World Health Organisation, WHO, has announced that it had been notified of 273 cases of Lassa fever, including 149 deaths in Nigeria between August 2015 and May 17, 2016.

EBONYI State government, yesterday, said 14 persons died of Lassa fever disease, while 83 suspected cases were recorded since the outbreak in January.

Lassa fever has claimed 14 lives in Taraba from January to date, an official has said.

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said it was doing everything possible to defeat the deadly Lassa fever like it did during the outbreak of Ebola virus, just as it urged residents of the state to be on red alert by embracing personal and environmental hygiene.
