Resident doctors at the Anambra State-owned Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka, have threatened to embark on strike over poor working conditions and unpaid allowances.

Doctors and other health workers in Abia State University Teaching Hospital, ABSUTH, Aba, Tuesday, staged a peaceful protest at the premises of the hospital to register their displeasure over the inability of the State Government to pay them their 21 months of salary arrears owed by the immediate-past administration.

“The talks collapsed yesterday. Right now we are just chilling and resting.”

Faced with sky-high inflation, low salaries and an overstretched healthcare system, doctors and nurses are leaving Nigeria in their thousands every year for better opportunities abroad.

Pate lamented that Nigeria has witnessed a generation of young doctors, health workers, tech entrepreneurs, and various professionals abandoning the country for better opportunities abroad.
