Young people are leading a people’s revolution in Algeria and Sudan, both developments remind us forcefully of the wages of mis-governance, the power of the people to seize control of their own destiny, and the role that the youth can play in a country’s development process. It is encouraging to see that in both countries, we are witnessing the triumph of the people’s will. In Algeria and Sudan, it is Arab Spring (or Winter?) all over, with the people saying No to Repression, No to Dictatorship, No to the abuse of power.

LORD Fredrick Lugard, a one-time governor general of Nigeria, didn’t get the consent of the people(s) of Nigeria before he cobbled the Northern and Southern protectorates together. And, his wife, Christine Shaw, christened the geographical space Nigeria. That’s how the disparate ethnic entities came together to become Nigeria. So, owing to our country’s heterogeneous nature, we embraced and adopted the federal system of government. Federalism is thought to be suitable for countries with heterogeneity.

THOUGH the tragic building collapse at Ita Faji, Lagos Island,  no longer features in news reports, its fallouts have continued to resonate. In the aftermath of the sad event and in line with international best practices, the Lagos State government swiftly embarked on a systematic process of demolishing defective buildings across Lagos Island. This is basically as a precautionary measure to forestall future occurrence of such gruesome episode. Naturally, in the process, some people were displaced and there was an urgent need to resettle them. 

Nigeria has the latent capacities that can be exploited to manage her internal local politics and dynamics

The incessant extrajudicial killing by the Police and Customs, in recent times, requires the attention of the government. The President needs to take a more drastic decision to nip this in the bud by holding the heads of these agencies accountable for any loss of life.
