He assured them that Total Nigeria Plc was committed to safety on the roads at all times and called on them to join the organization to promote safety on roads to put an end to the carnage on the highways.

They also called for provision of free education to all at all levels and international scholarship for deserving indigenes of host communities and establishment of higher institutions such as universities, polytechnics, colleges of education in the oil-producing riverine communities, relocation of operational headquarters of oil majors to the Niger-Delta and creation of more states and local governments in the region.

Governor Sylva said though attempts by his administration to ward off the pressure and bring those involved on board as agents of development failed, the pressure had become an embarrassing one in which every move by his administration for infrastructural development and human empowerment was politicized and altered to the detriment of the people.

He said the implication of underground water pollution was the destruction of certain micro-organisms that aid plant life, adding that “it would adversely affect agriculture, which is the source of livelihood of the people in the area.”
