My son’s captors collected ransom and still murdered him, laments dad By Anayo Okoli and Enyim Enyim THURSDAY,  December 17, 2009, was a normal day for the Iheaku family.  Mr. Chijioke Nnaemeka Iheaku, a lawyer and industrialist had started the day without any inkling or fear that danger of any sort awaited him.  

I called him at about 1.30 pm to find out if he had collected the money, only for him to inform me that his brother asked him to go back mid way, that he would collect the money. I felt bad that he had violated my instruction. But on a second thought, I assumed he would not meet them at home since it was late.

A rights group, the Centre for Victims of Extra_Judicial Killings and Torture, CVEKT AFRICA, have petitioned President Umoru Yar’Adua to urgently intervene in the trial of the suspect who allegedly kidnapped and murdered a Chinese national, Mr Feng Shyenyi in the factory of a motor cycle manufacturing company, Innoson group in Nnewi in 2007.

During investigation when Gbenga was in the police cell, an officer, attached to the Command, was given instruction by the officer to freeze the account of Gbenga’s wife, one Mrs Comfort Olubaniyi, with First Bank Account Number, 3873010033099, her account was frozen by this man without even this woman being indicted in any statement by Gbenga who was being detained in the Police cell. Also frozen was the account of Gbenga’s mother-in-law.

After I spent one month in the cell and paid N500, 000 and the trial, some officers asked me to keep quiet, that if I said anything or tried to fight the system, they would rope me into one criminal charge and send me to prison.

IN the year ended 2009, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) like every other security agency was faced with the usual immediate challenges of protecting life and property, detecting and preventing the commission of crimes. And like every other year, the force could neither be said to have fared well nor performed abysmally.
