Why your bank might not pay dividends for years, by Dele Sobowale

Why your bank might not pay dividends for years, by Dele Sobowale

Perhaps there is some truth in the statement that “when an old man dies, you lose a library”. At 82+ and 39 years writing on this page, I have been a media witness to four major banking upheavals – each occurring shortly after recapitalization was imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. Almost invariably, each […]

Why sustainable growth is difficult in Nigeria

Why sustainable growth is difficult in Nigeria

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and Vanguard Newspapers, on February 26, 2021, organised another Economic Summit at the Eko Hotels and Suites – partly designed to find a way for Nigeria to attain sustainable growth. That has proved elusive so far; and with the restriction of things, much longer than.We are thinking to have any hopes of achieving it.

Exit from recession much ado about nothing

Exit from recession much ado about nothing

Nigeria’s GDP in the fourth quarter of 2020 grew by 0.11 per cent in real terms in the fourth quarter of 2020. this follows, if you will recall, two consecutive negative growth in the third quarter and second quarter of 2020, which saw the country going into recession.

ECONOMISTS TALKING TO FGN IN VAIN

Abandon hope, all those who intend to advise the Federal Government of Nigeria, FGN, regarding how to get the economy grow at a faster rate than what we have experienced since 2015. This Federal Government is not likely to listen. I weep for Nigeria. How do I know that?

Promises that cannot be kept

Promises that cannot be kept

Since this is the Business/Economy page, very little will be said about security. If after almost six years in office, in addition to one and eight months in 1984-5, Buhari has not learnt that security and good economy are inseparable, then he will never learn. Indeed, there is abundant evidence to prove that we have a leadership class in government which as a whole is incapable of learning anything new. The saying – “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” – fits the All Progressives Congress, APC, government, as if it was written with them in mind. But, Buhari deserves some credit for making a statement which is half true.
