PORT HARCOURT— FEDERAL Government has been urged to absorb all repentant militants and their boys for the amnesty programme to be a success in the Niger Delta region.
A former Commander of Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, Sobomobo Jack, who spoke to Vanguard, yesterday, said he was worried by some of the developments in the ongoing amnesty programme.
He urged the Federal Government to ensure that all former militant leaders and repentant militants, who have demonstrated genuine repentance are absorbed in the amnesty programme, adding that a situation where the amnesty committee seems to be neglecting some groups in the region was not healthy for the exercise.
According to him, all former militant leaders should be carried along, “nobody should be treated as being above the other. This way the amnesty programme will be a success.â€
He condemned the abduction of four officials of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Abia State weekend, describing it as sad. He appealed for their unconditional release. “The abduction came to me as a shock. I join the families and Nigerians to appeal for their unconditional release,†he said.
