Nominates 3 for NPC membership

ABUJA—PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has asked the Senate to upgrade the Nigeria Police Academy, Kano, to a degree- awarding institution.

The President’s request was contained in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Senator David Mark, who read it on the
floor, yesterday.

President Jonathan, in the letter, entitled, An Act for the Establishment and Incorporation of the Nigeria Police Academy as a Degree-Awarding Institution, urged the Senate to expedite action on the bill and transform the academy into a full fledge degree-awarding institution.

The letter reads in part: “I forward herewith, for your kind consideration and passage into law, the attached draft bill for an act for the establishment and incorporation of the Nigeria Police Academy as a degree awarding institution and for other matters connected therewith.”

The President, also in another letter read by Senator Mark, forwarded names of three nominees to the Senate for confirmation as members of the National Population Commission, NPC.

Population Commission nominees

The nominees are: Alhaji Yusuf Sankara, representing Jigawa State, Alhaji Abdul-Lateef Aderemi Gbadamosi, from Oyo State, and Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha, representing Kaduna State.

Alhaji Mustapha’s nomination is to fill the vacancy left by the death of former member of the commission, Professor Bashir Ahmed, while the other two nominations are for re-appointment as members of the Commission.

In the letter, President Jonathan said the nomination was in accordance with Section 153 (i)(j) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and assured the Senate that Alhaji Gbadamosi and Alhaji Sankara were re-nominated based on their meritorious service during their first tenure which expired on the 27  April 2010.

The letter reads: “There is a need for a new Commissioner from Kaduna State following the vacancy created by the death of professor Bashir Ikara.

“Furthermore, two members of the Commission had performed creditably well in their first renewable tenure and their re-appointment for a second and final term would pave the way for continuity and sustain their involvement in the implementation of the ongoing programmes in the Commission.”
