ABUJA – The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier General Suleiman Kazaure, Tuesday, threatened to fire any staff caught in illegality, noting that the feedbacks from local and zonal stations were not encouraging.

Kazaure made the threat during the NYSC Inspectors’ Development Programme for capacity building organised for the 19 Northern states in Kubwa Orientation camp, Abuja, warned them against engaging in unwholesome practices.

The DG said that these negative practices could jeopardise the good intention of the scheme and make the youths to lose confidence in their inspectors.

According to him, “feedback from the periodic nationwide inspection of the corps location indicates that some of our local government and zonal officers engage in unwholesome practices that could bring the scheme into disrepute.

“Such practices include delegating your responsibility to Corps Liaison Officers, CLO, extortion, non residence at your operational base and irregular attendance at work; it is our desire to use this forum to address and put a stop to such acts of misconduct.”

He explained that challenges faced by the scheme had necessitated the training, calling on them to make the best use of the opportunity by contributing meaningfully to the proceeding of the training programme.

Kazaure said; “In the face of these challenges, this training is designed to update your knowledge and equip you sufficiently to be on top of the demand of your responsibilities at all times.

“You must strive to gain fuller understanding of the policies and operational guidelines of the scheme in order to achieve its aims and objectives throughout the nook and crannies of our country.

“This forum will afford you the opportunity to interact with one another, discuss your challenges, exchange ideas and proffer workable solutions that will enhance your effectiveness and productivity.”

In his remarks, the Coordinator of NYSC, FCT, Abdulrazak Salawu, appealed to the Director General to extend the development training and other programmes to other cadres of staff in the scheme.

“The importance of their assignments in the NYSC cannot be over emphasised, as it impacts the welfare, safety, utilization and output of the corps members on one hand and the continued relevance of NYSC as an organisation, cordial relations with members of our various host communities and the public perception of the scheme on the other hand,’’ he said.
