Staff and students of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze, Anambra State, await the flag-off of the rehabilitation work on the dilapidated Nsogwu Road that leads to the institution. Governor Willie Obiano had during his visit to the college recently promised the rehabilitation of the road within two weeks.
Addressing journalists at the permanent site of the college, the Public Relations Officer, Sam Otti, said the agony experienced by staff and students on the road would soon be over, as the state government had promised to reconstruct the link road.
Otti said the busy road serves both the staff and students of the college, as well as residents of Nsogwu and other adjoining areas within the locality. He explained that the road had become a death trap for road users, following its neglect by past administrations in the state.
He also noted that the management of the college renamed the link road as Chief Willie Obiano Boulevard during his visit to the college, where he donated a 32-seater Toyota bus.
According to him, the college management renamed the road after the governor in recognition of his laudable infrastructural development and improvement in education sector of the state.
Investigation revealed that the neglect of the road turned it to a death trap, with bumps, potholes, failed spots and gulley.
To alleviate the sorrow of the people, the management of the FCET Umunze, under the leadership of Prof Josephat Ogbuagu, took up the task of regular rehabilitation of a new road that leads to the college. Sadly, the road could not be tarred due to paucity of fund.
Some students, who spoke to our reporter, recounted their sad experiences on the new road, especially during rainy season, even as dust billows in the area during the dry season. They expressed joy that the construction of the Willie Obiano Boulevard as promised by the amiable governor would alleviate their suffering and complement the efforts of the college management in increasing access to the college.
