Tension is said to be brewing in Amechi-Uwani, an indigenous satellite town in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State, following  allegations that  some land speculators have  hijacked the running of the affairs of the community from the elected town union executive.

Former Senate president, Chief Ken Nnamani, is said to hail from the town where contests for control and sale of land have turned deadly in recent times.

Vanguard source revealed that two years ago, three youngmen were reportedly gunned down and another clobbered at a location of land dispute along the Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway, a development that allegedly led to the take-over of the disputed land and others around it, by the Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi administration.

Said a source that craved anonymity, “Mr. Sunday Ugwu, a well-known motor mechanic, was  the sole administrator of Amechi Uwani town union during the dispute and subsequent take-over of the land by the state government. “His subsequent appointment as chairman of the caretaker committee of Enugu South Local Government Area, led to insinuations that he had compromised the interest of the community for personal gains.

“Mr. Ugwu continued to function as sole administrator of the town union, and also as chairman of the local government council for several months, triggering widespread discontent and polarization of the community, a situation that persisted till the inauguration of a new town union executive only recently.”

It was gathered that former Enugu State Commissioner for Finance, and later, Lands, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, have been  persuaded at the general meeting of the community to accept the role of President General (PG) of the town.

Ogbodo, reluctantly took up the position, but vowed to “to do things differently”.
