A-Ibom Assembly demands confirmation of sacked AKSU workers

By Chioma Onuegbu

Uyo—Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has frowned at the wrongful sack of workers in the state-owned Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, demanding the backdating of their confirmation by one year from the date of appointment.

This was sequel to the consideration of a  report submitted by the Joint Committees of Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights, Public Petitions and Education on the matter during plenary, yesterday.

The House had in July 2016 deliberated on the petition of alleged  wrongful termination and downgrading of some workers in Akwa Ibom State University, Mkpat Enin.

The member representing Abak constituency, Friday Iwok, had brought the issue before the House under matters of urgent public importance.

In its resolution,  the House directed that “The petitioners, having stayed for more than two years, should not only be regularised but also confirmed and the date of their regularisation and confirmation backdated to one year and two years, respectively, from the dates of their appointments.

“The petitioners, who  are already due for promotion, scholarship, sponsorship or any other entitlements, including arrears of salaries, should have their entitlements given to them after due processes have been followed, and the employer should expedite action in this direction.”
