ABUJA—THE House of Representatives, yesterday, asked the Federal Government to comply with Federal Character Principles in appointments and recruitments into public offices and government agencies.

This was sequel to a motion promoted by Kingsley Chinda,PDP, Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, Rivers State, which was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote.

In his submission, Chinda explained that there had been recent concerns about some imbalance in appointments and sharing positions in offices by the Federal Government and some of its agencies.

He expressed concern that the appointments and sharing of posts into offices were in favour of certain zones.

Chinda, citing section 14 (1) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, said Nigeria was a state based on principles of democracy and social justice.

Chinda further expressed worry that the Federal Government and Federal Character Commission had not lived up to the laid down laws as there existed numerous cases of imbalance in appointments and sharing of posts.

He said the imbalance include the recent recruitment by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, appointment into boards and parastatals and more recently, the nomination of ambassadors.

Chinda said unless urgent and positive steps were taken to check the prevailing imbalance in the appointments and sharing of federal government posts, people would continue to be discontent and despondent.
