Ahead of  the 2016 Olympics  next month in Rio, Brazil, six Nigerian wrestlers accompanied by four officials which included the President of  the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Hon. Daniel Igali flew out yesterday to Madrid to participate in the Spanish Grand Prix beginning today to further hone their skills before the Games proper.

The team made up of two free-style male and four female wrestlers. The male wrestlers are Amas Daniel (65kg weight class) and Africa’s  bronze medallist in 97kg, Soso Tamarau will compete on Saturday, July 9. The ‘dancing queen’ of female wrestling, Odunayo Adekuoroye who first took the Olympic slot in the 53kg weight class leads other female wrestlers, Mercy Genesis who booked her to Rio at the last Africa/Oceanic Olympics qualifier held in Algiers, Algeria, Aminat Adeniyi in the 58kg and Seven-time Africa Champion, Blessing Oborududu in the 63kg class. They will compete on Sunday .

According to Dr Igali, the Spanish Grand Prix would further sharpen the skill of the wrestlers and also condition their minds towards the Brazil Games. He expressed optimism that the wrestlers would give a good account of themselves apart from affording the officials the last opportunity to observe them once more in a competitive mood. The team is expected back in Nigeria on Tuesday.
