BENIN—Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Mr Mike Igini, has admonished lawyers representing the commission at the election petitions tribunal in the state not to be partisan or unnecessarily join issues over frivolous motions designed to frustrate the course of justice at the tribunal.

Igini in a statement yesterday, reminded external solicitors engaged by the commission that their appointments were based on their professional merit and competence, therefore the commission expects qualitative and upright representation of the commission at the election tribunal.

He said: “You were appointed to act as counsel to the commission and not to hold brief for the winner of an election per se, or other co-respondents. In this regard, you are expected to present and explain the steps taken by the commission’s election officials in making a return in line with extant electoral laws and regulations.

“Therefore, you should not unnecessarily join issues over frivolous and vexatious applications or motions designed to unduly delay and frustrate the course of justice at the tribunal. Emphasis should be placed on upholding and maintaining the transparency and integrity of the electoral process.”
