Ex-internationals Henry Nwosu, Yisa Sofoluwe and Tajudeen Disu were the star attractions at the Annual Inter-House sports of St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Ebute Metta.

The former Super Eagles legends, who are ambassadors of the Greater Tomorrow Children’s Foundation, founded by 1984 AFCON silver medal winner, Paul Okoku were on hand to watch primary school pupils run and shine for glory at the school\’s premises located near Costain Bus Stop.

The school has been in existence since 1902 and has produced great sports stars like Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, Godwin Odiye and Okoku, amongst other leading professionals dotting the length and breadth of the world.

Pink House rules

On a day that Pink House won the competition, Nwosu, Sofoluwe and Disu rocked with the pupils in a carnival-like atmosphere, reminding one of the great gays when the bestrode the pitch with their mesmerizing runs and eye-catching defensive tackles.

Nwosu was a proven midfielder in the good old days when he lined up to play for the Green Eagles, winning the first Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 1980 at the National Stadium in Lagos. Sofoluwe, an hard-tackling defender in his time, was dreaded by opposition forwards who cringed at the prospects of facing the former Shooting Stars if Ibadan player while Disu, an hard-working midfielder of yore, passed the ball effortlessly as well as cut out supplies to opposition strikers. Disu was a tough nut to crack in the midfield and gained wide acceptance in the Flying Eagles and Green Eagles in the early ’80s.

So it was certainly a big deal when these soccer legends attended the inter-house sports of St Paul’s Primary School. For the kids, these legends were unknown to them but their parents, friends and teachers knew the former Eagles stars and were grateful to have them in their school to watch the next generation of sports talents.

And it was certainly an eye-full for the spectators as Pink House joined the stars of yesterday to win the competition.

It was not an easy ride to the champions trophy for Pink House, who edged out Blue House to the second position. Pink House won 11 gold, six silver and six bronze medals as against Blue’s harvest of 11 gold, three silver and eight bronze medals.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Head Teacher of St Paul’s school, Mrs Grace Jalekun thanked the Greater Tomorrow Children’s Foundation for contributing to the success of the competition.

On his part, Henry Nwosu told the pupils that they can combine sports and academics as long as they remained diligent and worked hard.

Tajudeen Disu urged sports officers in the Mainland Local Government Area to ensure that talents that shone like a million stars at the inter-house sports were monitored and properly groomed for the future.

Yisa Sofoluwe noted that the duty of nurturing young stars from the primary school level was the duty of parents, teachers and sports officers.
