Lagos State zonal chairman of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural gas workers (NUPENG) Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo was yesterday elected chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Lagos council.

He was elected unopposed by delegates.

Before the election, factional President of NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in a statement read on his behalf by Comrade Ismail Bello told the delegates that “As Comrades we must work together at all levels to restore the belief and confidence of the working people in the NLC as the bastion of hope for the masses and as the strong voice for the voiceless people in our country.”

“I therefore urge all state councils and all our members across the states to remain focused and committed to the lofty but attainable goal of restoring and reclaiming all lost grounds. The labour movement should  be responsive to the yearnings and aspirations of not only members/affiliates but must always be ready to provide alternative socio-political and economic policy framework that will help to galvanize increased productivity and shared prosperity for the mass of our people”.

In his acceptance speech, the new chairman Alhaji Korodo said; “I want to reiterate the commitment of the ‘Council’ under my leadership as chairman of NLC Lagos State to vigorously maintaining peace and harmony in the workplace and most importantly, promote, project and protect the rights of Nigerian worker against any form of oppression and suppression.”

“NLC Lagos State Council, with its anti-casualization committee due to be constituted soon, in line with its statutory obligation to defending and protecting the rights of every Nigerian worker, will be at the beck and call of any affiliate union and or worker whose right has been flagrantly abused by any management”.
