By Henry Umoru
AHEAD of the Presidential and general elections slated for March 28 and April 11, the South South Peoples Assembly, SSPA led by former Federal Commissioner for Information and elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, has called on the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega not to disenfranchise Nigerians.
Rising from a meeting of its extended National Executive Committee Meeting in Abuja, the SSPA while reiterating its call for the resignation of Jega, stressed that members of the group have lost confidence in him in conducting the 2015 elections impartially against the backdrop that “he is incompetent and dishonest.”
Reading a three- page communique at the end of the meeting, Deputy Chairman of the SSPA and former Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom State, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, retd, the group called on everyone to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan because of his achievements, stressing that a vote for Jonathan was a vote for a new Nigeria.
The communique read, “the South South Peoples Assembly resolves to re-affirm the endorsement of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, for re-election in the 2015 Presidential elections scheduled for March 28, 2015. As the first South-South politician to be elected leader of Nigeria, the Assembly is proud to be associated with the President for the giant strides and uncommon transformation and achievements he has recorded during his first tenure. The South South being the economic power house of the country, it is only fair and proper that Nigerians extend to us the privilege of leading the country for another term in the spirit of national cohesion, unity and solidarity. The SSPA enjoins all sons and daughters of the South-South geo-political zone, to massively vote for President Jonathan to restore our pride as a region.
- Appeal to Nigerians that a vote for President Jonathan is a vote for a new Nigeria. As the architect and convener of the National Conference, he has pledged his commitment to implementing the Report. The road to a new Nigeria, the new Nigeria of our dream, therefore lies in the re- election of President Jonathan. The SSPA calls on all Nigerians to re-elect him to implement the Resolutions of the National Conference.
- Commend President Jonathan for the success of military operations, in reclaiming territories hitherto occupied by the Boko Haram insurgents in the North East. He has indeed shown bravery, courage and leadership as a true Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
- Commend the gallantry of the Nigerian Armed Forces for the victories recorded so far, which has reassured Nigerians that given the right platform, the Military is capable of protecting the territorial integrity of Nigeria in consonance with their well established reputation in global peace keeping operations.
