BARELY 24 hours workers of the Enugu State Water Corporation protested move by out-going Governor Sullivan Chime administration to bring in a private firm to take over the collection of water rate in the state for the next 25 years, the State House of Assembly has stopped the deal which was earlier scheduled to take off as from today (Friday).
The legislators, subsequently, summoned the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr. M.C. Nwachukwu to appear before it next Tuesday to explain the concession agreement which was allegedly perfected without the lawmakers’ knowledge and the backing of the law.
The Water Corporation workers had raised alarm in a petition titled ‘The Slavery of Water Corporation’ saying that the concession if allowed would render the General Manager of the Corporation redundant and will lead to mass sack of workers.

Also yesterday the House summoned the State Commissioner for Education, the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (ESUBEB) as well as the Managing Director of Eminite Emene to appear before it next Tuesday.
This followed the adoption of the report of the House committee on Education, Science and Technology headed by Mr. Michael Onyeze which was read on the floor of the House, yesterday.
They are coming “to answer questions in the plenary on the level of performance of current projects being executed by the State Universal Basic Education Board especially fund released in respect of each project.
In adopting the resolution, the House presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Eugene Odo resolved that “the State Universal and Basic Education Board be restrained from awarding further contracts until the State House of Assembly is satisfied on the level of performance in the ongoing project.
