ASABA—GOVERNOR Emmanuel Uduaghan’s administration in Delta State has named a street in Asaba after  the former First Lady, late Mrs. Maryam Babangida.

The street re- named after her is the former  Anwai road stretching from Summit road junction to Anwai-Asaba campus of the Delta State University, DELSU.

State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Oma Djebah  who stated this while briefing the press on the outcome of the Executive Council Meeting, last Thursday, said the former First Lady needed to be immortalized as an illustrious daughter of the state and in view of  her indelible contributions to the development of the country and the enthronement of the rights of women .

He added that government will also establish a Women Development Centre in the state in her name and also participate actively in the  post burial arrangements being planned by the Okogwu family  of Asaba where she hailed from.

Meanwhile, the member representing Oshimili South constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mr. Emaka Okonji has commended governor Uduaghan for this gesture, saying that “the people of Oshimili South where late Maryam hailed from are proud of Maryam and immortalizing her is welcome and well deserved.

Mr. Okonji noted that the economy of Delta State has improved tremendously “through the activities of Governor Uduaghan but I am calling on the people of Asaba to key in because what he is doing is for a long term putting facilities on ground to boost the economy.

“A case in point is the Asaba International Airport nearing completion and when that airport becomes operational, ancillary activities would be available and employment would be generated.”

By this since the people of Asaba have the land”, he went on, “they should go into development of houses, reel estate business  to check accommodation problem and to better their economic fortunes too”, he said.
