BISHOP of the Anglican Diocese of Lagos Mainland, Rt. Rev Adebayo Akinde, has urged Nigerians to wake up from their slumber. In his new year sermon at the Cathedral of St. Jude, Ebute Metta, he said the time calls for vigilance in our individual and national lives.

Describing sleep as useful to the human body, he urged Nigerians, however, not to indulge in “shameful sleep” which enthrones irresponsibility.

He cited irresponsibility as physical and spiritual, explaining that spiritual carelessness leads to stubbornness, disobedience and indifference. Quoting 1Samuel 15: 23, he  said people indulge in witchcraft and Idolatry when they rebel against God’s word through corruption and other vices. He reminded the nation that God is faithful when we do his will.

He asked for a new approach to doing things so that 2010 can be a year of restoration and joy for leaders and followers.
