As part of the on-going campaign by Lekki Concession Company, LCC to promote road safety and positively influence road user habits, the company recently completed the second edition of training and re-certification for 100 drivers in Lagos State.
They were among the 200 drivers selected from commercial bus operators popularly known as “danfos”, from motor parks located in Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki.
The training and re-certification programme which took place at the Lagos State Drivers Institute, Lagos Island, was organised to enlighten commercial bus drivers on the proper use of roads, traffic signs and general car maintenance, as well as adherence to the Nigerian highway code of conduct.
LCC’s Head of Commercial, Mr. Charles Imevbore, used the training to re-affirm the company’s commitment to reach out to commercial drivers with the road safety messages. “We also maintain regular dialogue with recognised road transport unions and private operators, all of which provides an avenue for continuous coaching on road safety guidelines and best practices, including features such as proper use of roundabouts and illegal parking,” he said.
“Improving road safety in a sustainable way ultimately means that road users themselves need to adapt their behaviour accordingly, and to learn to drive more responsibly. LCC alone cannot achieve this, and others (law enforcement agencies, the wider community,) have a major role to play.
Our hope is that our modest contributions and initiatives so far and those we plan to develop in a foreseeable future, will help to bring about positive change and save lives. We also encourage the commercial operators to register on our eTag, the electronic toll payment device, which charges N80 exclusively for danfo buses at the toll plaza.
With eTag, similar drivers won’t waste time queuing in the cash lanes at the plaza, which means they can make more trips with passengers which translates to more income for them,” Mr. Imevbore said.
