Athletics Federation of Nigeria will resume its second phase camping of athletes for the 2014  Commonwealth Games on Sunday January 5.

This is coming after what officials described as a successful conditioning camp, which ran from the first week of November, before the athletes and coaches went on break for the yuletide celebrations. The second phase will see the athletes go into specifics and the American coaches, who were recently appointed by the National Sports Commission, are expected to join in the grooming of the athletes for the season’s activities.

It was gathered that Annie Taylor and her compatriot Eric Campbell visited the camp just before the Christmas break to compare notes with their Nigerian counterparts on the ground.

According to an AFN official, the American coaches are being expected, but he failed to put a finger on when they will be in the camp that will run at the Abuja high performance centre.

“They met us in camp and left and did not come back till the break for Xmas. We expect that they will be with us to embellish what our coaches will be doing,” said the official, adding that there will be no conflicting roles.

“They have their specific roles, which include the determination of  fitness levels of our athletes scientifically and nutritionally. These are some of the things our athletes have been missing. So how can we have such a thing now and be fighting? We have literate coaches who understands division of labour, so there can’t be conflicts.”
