Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has been admitted to hospital after severe abdominal pains, a spokesperson for the South African Football Association, SAFA, said on Wednesday.
The doctor treating the 56-year old has declared Igesund might be suffering from appendicitis and further investigations are required to confirm the diagnosis.
“Thorough and further investigations are being carried out to confirm the diagnosis. We are however, confident that he will be back on his feet soon.
It is nothing too serious,” added Dr Ephraim Nematswerani. Igesund led South Africa to the quarter final of the just ended Orange Africa Cup of Nations where they were knocked out on penalties by Mali.
His next assignment with the team would be at home against the Central African Republic next month for a 2014 World Cup qualifier game.
Former Bafana coach gets 3-year jail term
Former Bafana Bafana assistant coach, Phil Setshedi has been sentenced to eight years over match fixing. He would serve three years in prison and the other five years under suspension.
The Bellville Commercial Crimes Court, in Cape Town yesterday, 12 February 2013 handed down the sentence after Setshedi was convicted on December 7, 2012 though his sentenced was deferred to February this year.
The former Orlando Pirates captain has been found guilty for having unduly and improperly influenced the results of a game counting for the 2011 Vodacom play offs.
The act is against section 15 of the prevention and combating of corrupt activities Act 12 of 2004.
Setshedi has not yet taken a step as concerning an appeal to the sentence. Safa(South African Football Association) President,Mr Kirsten Nematandani expressed his delight at the judgement as he believes it is an example for other would-be match fixers to know they have no place in the sport.
“Once again, this sends out a strong warning to anyone who might intend to tarnish the good name of the sport through corrupt and any other unsporting behaviour.
“In accordance with FIFA and SAFA’s zero tolerance to corruption and match fixing, we would like to warn other potential criminals that the long arm of the law would not spare you,” said Mr Nematandani.
