A coalition of organised labour unions, professionals, artisans, traders and other stakeholders under the aegis of Working People United, WoPU, has announced plans to confer its Responsible Citizen Badge on the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, for what it described as his patriotic defence of Nigeria while speaking abroad.

The group said the honour followed Pastor Adeboye’s remarks at the US–Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala in Washington, where he defended Nigeria’s efforts to tackle insecurity and clarified the constitutional responsibilities of the President and security agencies.

Announcing the planned award in Abuja, WoPU said Pastor Adeboye demonstrated courage and statesmanship by presenting what it described as a balanced perspective on the country’s security situation instead of portraying Nigeria negatively before an international audience.

According to the coalition, “Pastor Adeboye has consistently demonstrated leadership that extends beyond the pulpit. His voice in moments of national tension reflects responsibility, wisdom, and a sincere commitment to the stability and progress of Nigeria.”

The group noted that during the event in Washington, the cleric rejected claims that the President had done little to address insecurity, explaining that the Commander-in-Chief’s responsibility is to provide strategic direction while operational implementation rests with the nation’s security agencies.

WoPU stated that Pastor Adeboye’s comments reinforced constitutional accountability and encouraged a more constructive national conversation on security challenges.

The National Coordinator General of the organisation, Prince Akporeha Williams, said the cleric’s intervention stood in contrast to the actions of some Nigerians who, according to him, seek popularity by speaking negatively about the country while overseas.

“Unlike others who have gone beyond the shores of the country to badmouth and portray the country negatively to gain popularity, Pastor Adeboye’s position reflects courage, moral clarity and a deep commitment to national cohesion,” Williams said.

The coalition explained that its Responsible Citizen Badge recognises individuals whose public engagements promote national unity, responsible leadership and constructive dialogue on issues affecting the country.

WoPU added that the award, unveiled during its Good Governance Summit held on June 25, 2026, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, is a civic rather than political recognition for citizens whose contributions advance peace, accountability and national development.
