Industrialist and Chairman of Oranto Petroleum Ltd, Prince (Engr.) Arthur Eze, OFR, has instituted a scholarship programme for 50 indigent but academically outstanding students of Northwest University Sokoto (NWUS), beginning from the 2026/2027 academic session.
According to a statement issued by the university’s Director of Communications, Public Affairs and Protocol, Abdallah Elkurebe, the initiative is designed to support brilliant students facing financial challenges while promoting access to higher education.
Elkurebe said the offer, conveyed in a letter dated May 8, 2026, will initially benefit 50 full-time undergraduate students across various faculties of the institution.
The scholarship will cover either tuition fees alone or both tuition and accommodation, depending on the arrangement approved by the university and the sponsor.
He explained that beneficiaries would be selected based on academic merit, financial need and good character, adding that the awards would remain valid throughout the students’ degree programmes, provided they maintain satisfactory academic performance and discipline.
According to the statement, Prince Eze requested the university’s scholarship committee to recommend qualified candidates, while his office would collaborate with the institution to conclude the selection process and disburse the awards.
The philanthropist said the initiative reflects his commitment to developing Nigeria’s future leaders and professionals by expanding educational opportunities for deserving students.
Prince Eze also commended the founder of Northwest University Sokoto, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, for his contributions to education in Nigeria.
“I wish to express my deep respect for the Founder of the University, Distinguished Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. His tireless contributions toward the advancement of education in Nigeria have opened doors for countless young people and strengthened the nation’s future. It is a privilege to support and build upon the foundation he has laid,” he said.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of Northwest University Sokoto, Prof. Mukhtar Umar Bunza, described the scholarship as a timely intervention that would reduce the financial burden on deserving students and expand access to quality higher education.
He also assured the sponsor of the university’s commitment to ensuring a transparent selection process and the judicious implementation of the scholarship scheme in line with the conditions of the award.
