The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its interventions in the education sector and other socio-economic initiatives, while urging the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle the country’s worsening security challenges.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, the incoming President of NAUS, Comrade Tiamiyu Olayinka Ibraheem, said the appeal was necessitated by the numerous challenges confronting the nation, even as he acknowledged the government’s efforts to address inherited problems.

He stressed the need for a deliberate and renewed commitment to policies that directly improve the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, who continue to bear the brunt of the country’s economic hardship.

NAUS particularly applauded the humanitarian interventions of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, highlighting her contributions to tuberculosis control, support for education, assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises, and other social intervention programmes.

According to the association, “These initiatives have contributed to poverty reduction and improved the living conditions of many Nigerians. Indeed, the Federal Government’s introduction of the student loan scheme is a landmark policy that has expanded access to higher education and increased enrolment in tertiary institutions.

“We have consistently advocated increased funding for education, and the student loan programme aligns with that objective. This policy reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the financial barriers preventing many Nigerians from pursuing tertiary education, and we are grateful.”

The association also praised the Federal Government’s decision to redirect funds previously spent on fuel subsidies towards infrastructure development and education, noting that the policy has accelerated infrastructure projects across the country.

Despite acknowledging the government’s achievements, NAUS expressed concern over the persistent incidents of kidnapping, banditry and other forms of insecurity, describing them as a major threat to national development.

The association specifically condemned the abduction and continued captivity of schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

“The unfortunate abduction and continued captivity of schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State saddens our hearts. It is, indeed, a national embarrassment and a deeply troubling situation,” the association stated.

NAUS called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of all abducted victims across the country and ensure that Nigeria becomes a safer environment for education, business and everyday life.

While reaffirming its readiness to support government policies that promote education and improve citizens’ well-being, the association urged the Federal Government to reconsider policies granting amnesty to bandits and terrorists, particularly any initiative that seeks to integrate former criminal elements into the nation’s security architecture.

According to NAUS, such measures could pose significant security risks and potentially encourage the continuation of criminal activities.
