In a bold move aimed at unlocking Nigeria’s tourism potential and reducing dependence on oil revenues, the Eko Tourism Foundation, ETF, and Arik Air have initiated a strategic partnership designed to transform Lagos into Africa’s leading tourism destination.

The landmark collaboration was proposed on Wednesday during a high-level visit by the ETF Governing Board to Arik Air’s corporate headquarters in Lagos, where both organisations pledged to explore avenues for deepening tourism development through aviation-driven initiatives.

Leading the ETF delegation, former Minister of Information and Culture and Chairman of the Foundation’s Governing Board/Board of Trustees, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, described aviation as the lifeblood of global tourism, stressing that no destination can thrive without efficient air connectivity.

“Airlines are the gateway to tourism. Aviation and tourism are two wings of the same bird,” Mohammed declared.

He noted that despite Lagos’ rich cultural heritage, vibrant entertainment industry, breathtaking coastline and world-famous nightlife, the city cannot fully maximise its tourism potential without strong airline partnerships that connect visitors seamlessly to the destination.

Mohammed praised Arik Air for maintaining a strategic domestic and regional network over the last two decades despite challenges in the aviation industry, describing the airline as a critical player in efforts to make Lagos the tourism gateway to West Africa.

He said the proposed alliance would combine Arik Air’s extensive route network with Lagos’ cultural assets to create a world-class tourism experience capable of attracting millions of visitors and generating massive economic benefits.

“Together, the Eko Tourism Foundation and Arik Air can create a seamless, world-class experience that catches a traveller’s attention the moment they book a ticket and leaves them awestruck by the time they step out of Murtala Muhammed International Airport,” he said.

“Let us combine the wings of Arik Air with the cultural heartbeat of Lagos to drive our economy, create millions of jobs for our youth and write a proud new chapter for Nigeria.”

Tourism, Aviation Partnership

Under the proposed framework, both organisations will collaborate on an ambitious “Destination Lagos” and “Destination Nigeria” marketing campaign, integrating tourism promotions into Arik Air’s booking platforms, digital channels and in-flight communication systems.

The partnership also envisions the launch of an “Experience Lagos” project, which will feature specially curated travel packages, stopover tourism programmes and discounted flight incentives tied to major cultural, fashion, music and arts festivals hosted in Lagos.

In addition, Arik Air has been invited to become a corporate member of the Eko Tourism Foundation under its elite categories of Champions, Patrons or Industry Pillars, giving the airline a direct role in shaping tourism advocacy and policy discussions.

Responding to the proposal, Arik Air’s Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Charles Arumemi-Johnson, described the visit as timely and aligned with the airline’s aspirations.

He assured the delegation that the proposals presented by the Foundation would receive favourable consideration, signaling the airline’s readiness to support initiatives capable of boosting tourism traffic and economic activity.

The Eko Tourism Foundation was established by the 137-year-old Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) as part of efforts to build a sustainable and profitable alternative to Nigeria’s oil-dependent economy.

The Foundation’s mission is to position Lagos as a global tourism powerhouse by showcasing its history, cultural heritage, cuisine, music, film industry, fashion scene and unique social experiences.

Central to that vision is the expansion of globally recognised attractions such as “Detty December,” concerts, festivals and the famed Owambe culture into year-round tourism products capable of drawing visitors from across the world.

ETF’s global profile recently received a major boost when it secured admission as an Affiliate Member of UN Tourism, giving it access to a network of more than 500 leading tourism stakeholders worldwide and strengthening its capacity to attract international partnerships and investments.

Analysts say the emerging alliance between ETF and Arik Air could mark a turning point in Nigeria’s tourism industry, linking aviation and destination marketing in a coordinated effort to position Lagos as the continent’s next major tourism and entertainment hub.
