ABUJA — The Chairman of the State Chairmen Forum of the Social Democratic Party, Lagos State chapter, Femi Olaniyi Ferrari, has called for credible elections, people-centred governance and national unity as Nigeria marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a message commemorating the June 12 anniversary in Abuja, Ferrari described the June 12, 1993 presidential election as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a symbol of citizens’ determination to shape their future through the ballot.
He said June 12 was more than an election, but a covenant between leaders and citizens founded on justice, accountability and service to the people.
Ferrari said the party remains committed to the ideals that defined the June 12 struggle, including social justice, equity and democratic governance.
He noted that honouring the sacrifices of June 12 heroes requires more than remembrance, stressing that practical steps must be taken to strengthen democracy and improve citizens’ welfare.
The SDP Lagos chairman identified credible elections as a key priority, saying the sacrifices associated with the June 12 struggle demand an electoral process that truly reflects the will of the people.
He also advocated policies aimed at reducing poverty, creating jobs, improving healthcare delivery and expanding access to quality education.
Ferrari urged leaders at all levels to embrace governance that places the needs and aspirations of ordinary Nigerians at the centre of public policy.
He further called for greater unity among Nigerians, saying the June 12 experience showed that competence and leadership should take precedence over ethnic, religious and sectional considerations.
Addressing young Nigerians, he encouraged them to participate actively in the democratic process and remain committed to using their votes to shape the country’s future.
Ferrari expressed confidence that Nigeria can achieve the vision championed by late M.K.O. Abiola through integrity, service and responsible leadership.
He also pledged that the Lagos chapter of the party would continue to promote the ideals of June 12 through constructive engagement and people-oriented policies.
Ferrari prayed for the repose of the souls of Abiola and other democracy heroes, while urging Nigerians to preserve and strengthen the country’s democratic gains.
