* Applauds Deputy’s ‘Lion Spirit’

* Receives Club’s Excellence Award

ASABA – GOVERNOR Sheriff Oborevwori on Thursday acknowledged the Lions Club impactful humanitarian service to communities as visible both in Delta state and across Nigeria.

The governor gave the acknowledgement in Asaba as he declared open the Multiple Districts 404 Nigeria Convention of the Lions Club International tagged ‘Asaba Amaka 2026’.

Repressented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, the Governor on the occasion eulogised his Deputy, Monday Onyema, a past District Governor of the Club for approaching leadership with the Lions spirit.

He told the gathering of Lions, “Since 1917, Lions Club has grown into the world’s largest service organisation with over 1.4Million members across over 200 countries.

“In Nigeria and here In Delta state your impact is visible. From medical outreaches and educational suppport to hunger relief and environmental initiatives, we sincerely appreciate your contributions to improving lives.

“This Convention is no doubt a celebration of service, compassion and humanity. As a government, we see Lions Clubs as partners in progress. The challenges we face require shared visions and collaboration.

“Since assuming office May 2023, our administration has remained committed to meaningful development, poverty reduction and improved welfare. We will continue to work with credible partners like you to build a more inclusive and properous state.”

In appreciation of his Deputy, Oborevwori expressed, “I’m proud to note that my Deputy Governor (Monday Onyeme) is a distinguished Lion whose life reflect your values of service and compassion.”

Meanwhile the governor was honoured with the Icon of Leaderahip Excellence Award of the Lions International in recognition of his exceptional leadership and developmental strides in Delta State. 

Dr. Ibrahim Jide Bello, Multiple Council Chairperson, Lions Club International District 404 Nigeria, presented the award to the Governor at earlier at Government House Asaba.

“Thank you, Governor, for providing the enabling environment that gave us the confidence to choose Asaba as host for this multiple convention. 

“Asaba was carefully selected after considering several important factors, including infrastructure, accessibility, security, and many other key requirements. Thank you for your support and your leadership,” he told the awardee.

Bello revealed that Lions International Foundation further intends to support healthcare and humanitarian initiatives in the state, including interventions at the Warri Central Hospital and other community-focused programmes.

The Governor, receiving the award said, “Hosting this event will not only boost tourism and economic activities in the state, but will also further project Delta State as a peaceful, welcoming, and investment-friendly destination.

“You are indeed partners in progress, and we are proud of the work you continue to do in service to humanity.”
