Ooni, varsity don urge Nigerians to shift from ego to service

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and an Associate Professor of Computing/IT Education at Osun State University (Uniosun), Oluwafemi Abanikannda, have urged Nigerians to move away from “ego” and focus on service.

The duo spoke at the civic recognition and reception of outstanding career achievements organised by the Otan‑Ayegbaju Progressive Union (OAPU), on Saturday.

Abanikannda, who is Director of Academic Planning at Uniosun, in a keynote address titled “Roots, reach and responsibility: what our origins demand of our achievements,” advised people not to forget their origins.

“The core responsibility to one’s origin is to turn accomplishment into help for others. People should stop chasing perfection and validation but to pursue progress with broader purpose. Real success is not just about accumulating accolades or wealth, but about aligning one’s achievements with values such as connection, service, and purpose”, he said.

In his remark, the Ooni advised recipients of the award not to relent in giving back to their community, saying the best place someone can be celebrated is his community.

“If you help your people to grow, it is more than money. I want the recipients to know that you have been a native of Otan before you become Nigerians. There are little things that you will do for the community that they will not forget forever,” Ooni said.

OAPU’s Global President, Adetunji Mosebolatan, explained that the community decided to celebrate its outstanding sons and daughters to appreciate their accomplishments and also to set a good example for younger people.

Recipients of the outstanding career achievements include: Ayodeji Alabi, Executive Director, Ally Kay Oil and Gas , Dr. Dele Alabi, President, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), DIG Funsho Adegboye (Rtd), Chief Olusegun Jolaawo SAN, Prof. Felix Olatunji, Dean Faculty of Culture, Uniosun, Prof. Segun Aina, son of Emeritus Professor Olu Aina

In a goodwill message, Dr. Segun Aina, founding president of the Fintech Association of Nigeria and former president of OAPU—said that when communities pause to recognise excellence, it sends the message that hard work and integrity matter, and that service will be remembered.

He added that the event is also meant to motivate young people and aspiring professionals, reminding them that greatness is possible even from “humble beginnings” in the town.
