Kaduna — Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has confirmed the release of 82 worshippers abducted by bandits during a church service in Kurmin Wali village, Kajuru Local Government Area, on January 18, 2026.

The governor made the disclosure on Wednesday while visiting the freed victims at the Kaduna State Women and Children Shelter, where they are currently receiving medical attention and psychosocial support.

Recall that bandits had attacked the community during a worship service, abducting 177 congregants. Eleven victims were earlier released, leaving 166 in captivity before the latest development.

Governor Sani expressed sympathy with the victims over their ordeal and reassured residents of Kurmin Wali that concerted efforts were ongoing to secure the release of those still held by the abductors. He expressed optimism that the remaining captives would regain their freedom in the coming days.

“It was with a heavy yet hopeful heart that I visited our brothers and sisters from Kurmin Wali who have returned from the grip of banditry,” the governor said. “They are receiving medical care and psychosocial support, and I am encouraged by their positive response to treatment. In due course, they will be certified fit to reunite with their families and return to normal life.”

He described the encounter as deeply moving, noting that the survivors’ resilience, optimism and expressions of gratitude to the state government reflected their strength of character and enduring hope despite the trauma they endured.

Governor Sani reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to ending banditry and kidnapping across Kaduna State, stressing that no effort would be spared until all abducted persons are safely rescued and reunited with their families.

He also commended security agencies for their gallantry, swift response and dedication in combating criminal elements, while urging residents to continue cooperating with authorities to help restore lasting peace in affected communities.

As part of measures to strengthen security in the area, the governor disclosed that he had formally requested the establishment of a military base in Kurmin Wali from the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff.

“This critical step will significantly enhance security in Kurmin Wali and its environs, affirming our resolve to protect lives, restore peace and uphold the dignity of every citizen of Kaduna State,” he said.
