How bad networks are killing smartphone batteries in Nigeria

By mid-afternoon, many Nigerians are already hunting for a power outlet. Phones that left home fully charged begin to flash low-battery warnings long before the day ends, while others grow uncomfortably hot in the palm.

For millions of smartphone users across the country, the frustration is often blamed on ageing devices or faulty batteries. But industry data suggests a different culprit: Nigeria’s network quality.

A new nationwide performance report by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has linked poor network quality in parts of the country to faster battery drain, device overheating and sluggish phone performance, revealing an often-overlooked cost of weak internet connectivity.

The analysis, powered by Ookla Advanced Analytics Services, AAS, examined millions of mobile measurements across Nigeria and found that smartphones connected to unstable or congested networks are forced to work harder just to stay online. This extra effort, the report says, drains battery life, raises device temperature and degrades the overall user experience.

Rather than focusing only on coverage, the study mapped what it described as “high-stress zones” – locations where phones consume unusually high amounts of power, particularly during peak usage hours between noon and 4 p.m.

According to the findings, devices operating in these areas recorded download speeds that were 21 per cent slower and upload speeds that fell by as much as 30 per cent compared to phones on more stable networks. Latency also increased by an average of seven milliseconds, leading to noticeable delays in browsing, voice calls and video streaming.

“Excessive battery drain occurs when phones repeatedly search for a usable signal or struggle with heavy network congestion,” the report noted, adding that users in these zones experience internet performance that is nearly one-third worse than in better-served areas.

The impact does not stop at battery life. The study also tracked smartphone temperatures and discovered that devices are more likely to overheat in areas with poor network quality. In these so-called “hot zones,” download speeds dropped by 23 per cent, upload speeds declined by 26 per cent, and responsiveness worsened, with an additional six milliseconds of delay.

“As devices heat up, they automatically reduce performance to cool down,” the report explained, increasing the likelihood of buffering, lag and slow app response. The overheating was linked to heavy data processing, unstable signals and prolonged attempts by devices to maintain network connections.

The NCC warned that the consequences of poor network quality extend far beyond slower internet. Users in affected areas are forced to charge their phones more frequently, limiting mobility and productivity, while prolonged overheating and rapid battery drain can shorten the lifespan of smartphones, driving up replacement costs.

The findings also revealed a widening digital quality gap, with sharp differences between low-stress and high-stress network zones, sometimes within the same city.

As Nigeria pushes toward faster broadband and next-generation networks, the NCC urged telecom operators and regulators to shift focus from coverage alone to quality of experience, stressing that better connectivity should not come at the expense of battery life, device performance or everyday digital comfort
