Nigerian couture designer Omosalewa Ogunjimi, founder and creative director of luxury fashion brand SHALLYBLAQ, has emerged as the Continental Winner in the Apparel Category at the Real Leather. Stay Different. (RLSD) Africa Talent Leather Design Competition 2025.
Her winning collection, titled “UNBURNT,” stood out for its powerful storytelling, craftsmanship, and innovative use of leather, drawing inspiration from Moremi Ajasoro, the legendary Yoruba warrior queen known for her courage, sacrifice, and resilience.
The collection explores themes of strength, endurance, transformation, and hope, translating cultural history into contemporary couture silhouettes.
Using predominantly cowhide leather in line with the competition’s sustainability requirements, Ogunjimi incorporated Adire-inspired motifs and symbolic elements representing water, fire, protection, and renewal, creating a visual narrative rooted deeply in African heritage.
Speaking on the recognition, Ogunjimi described the win as a defining moment in her creative journey, noting that UNBURNT reflects the resilience of African women and the enduring relevance of indigenous stories when expressed through modern design language.
The RLSD Africa Talent Leather Design Competition is a pan-African initiative that celebrates emerging designers who demonstrate originality, sustainability, and excellence in leather craftsmanship. Ogunjimi’s win places her among a growing generation of African designers redefining global perceptions of leather fashion through culturally grounded innovation.
With this milestone, the designer continues to position SHALLYBLAQ as a brand committed to elevating African narratives within the global couture and bridal fashion space, while championing craftsmanship, heritage, and contemporary elegance.
