Nigerian cloud security engineer, Bukunmi Ofili is at the forefront of redefining how organizations detect, respond to, and recover from security incidents in large-scale cloud systems.
As cybersecurity challenges grow in complexity, traditional strategies built on keeping attackers out are proving insufficient.
“Modern cloud environments are dynamic by nature. Infrastructure changes continuously, services scale automatically, and applications are updated frequently,” Ofili explained.
“Security incidents are no longer rare anomalies; they are operational realities that must be anticipated, detected early, and managed effectively.”
Ofili highlighted that perimeter defenses, though still important, are no longer enough to safeguard complex cloud infrastructures.
“Many incidents originate not from direct attacks but from misconfigurations, compromised credentials, vulnerable dependencies, or unexpected interactions between services “No perimeter is perfect in environments that change constantly and operate at scale,” she noted.
In large cloud systems, incident management is treated as a core engineering function rather than a reactive task. Preparation, repeatability, and automation are essential. Structured workflows reduce uncertainty during high-pressure situations, ensuring that containment actions are executed efficiently and services recover quickly. Ofili stressed the importance of cross-team coordination, clear ownership, and defined escalation paths to maintain control during incidents.
“Effective incident response limits damage, restores services, and reduces long-term impact,” she says.
Her work demonstrates a shift from prevention-focused security to operational resilience, showing that in today’s cloud systems, true security is measured not by avoiding incidents entirely but by how well systems withstand and recover from them.
