Ikhana dreams of World Cup victory

Nigeria’s women team, the Super Falcons flew out yesterday to Harare for the African women championship qualifiers against Zimbabwe with their coach Kadiri Ikhana boasting that his girls can win the FIFA Women World Cup in 2015.

Ikhana will be playing his first competitive game in charge against the Zimbabwean women on Saturday and according to him, his players, a mixture of youth and experience,  have potentials to do well in Africa and the world.

“I know the football federation has given me a semi-final target at the World Cup but I want to say here that our target as a team is to win the world Cup in 2015,” boasted the former Kano Pillars and Kwara United coach.

“I know many Nigerians would say this is only wishful thinking but remember it is the same way they said we (Enyimba) could not win the CAF Champions League in 2003, but it was possible. I want to also say this is possible.

“I have a list of 21 players today because we have four games. It is a mixture of youthfulness and experience with the likes of Perpetua Nkwocha, Stella Mbachu, Rita Chikwelu, Onome Ebe, Desire Oparanozie, Esther Sunday and Precious Dede. The team will get better by the day.”

The team have been African champions a record six times, but they are yet to make a big impact at the World Cup stage.
